Friesians in North America

It's confirmed, we have Friesian Fever! The problem with Friesians is that once you have one, you want more. Please meet our Friesian family:

It all started with Odette fan de Koldenhool, "Odey," our FPS registered Friesian Ster Mare. She was seven months pregnant and charmed us with her gentle nature and personality. We were in awe of her gorgeous black coat, soft brown, kind eyes, the most adorable small black ears and fluffy feet. And then there was her long mane and tail!!! It was amazing to watch her run free - and what smooth gaits!

She was in foal to the FPS approved stallion Rindert 406, a first-prize winner at the 2006 Friesian Stallion Show in Holland. This champion stallion's semen is NOT available in North America, which means you have to import his pregnant mares. With high scores for his gaits, temperament and trot, we were excited about meeting his offspring.

Odey had a textbook pregnancy and gave birth to the best little colt! This was her fourth foal, in between gaining points in Z-level dressage in Holland. We stayed with her, in wonder, as she welcomed Verdi van der B into the ‘horse world'. It was a very special moment when he called out and all the horses in our barn simultaneously called back. Soon after, Verdi crawled over to his mother's face and they touched noses for the first time.

Verdi was charming, warm and friendly from the beginning. What a great joy; eager to learn, bright, curious, brave and just plain gorgeous! He learned so much in his first four months, and grew like a weed, sprouting a mane, tail and feathers. You can view videos and pictures of Verdi on our site. Aside from eating, his favourite pastimes are playing with his gelding friend and being groomed. He should mature around 16 HH.

So, after finding Odey, we began the search for our next Friesian, and after several months of thorough research, we discovered Othello a.k.a. 'Platinum Dreams in Ebony'. Born and bred in Holland, this fine FPS registered Friesian underwent trick training by Cor de Jong. Prior to joining us, he was one of the fabulous exhibition horses, performing with a group of stallions in quadrilles and exhibitions in Germany.

We then began looking for a Friesian to offer for sale, and after a lengthy search, found a tremendous FPS registered Ster stallion, Lutke. He was one of the very few actually chosen to go through the Dutch-approved stallion process. With good semen and no red factor, everyone was hopeful. Unfortunately, he did not become approved, but received good comments from the Dutch judges and is welcome to try again.

Lutke is now five years old with tons of potential. It's possible he doesn't know he's a stallion, given he handles like a gelding with his excellent manners and gentle nature. He's a softy with eternal desires to be petted and loved. In fact, he is such a great stallion, we decided to keep him for a while and have both Lutke and Othello in 'boarding school' where they enjoy dressage training with one of Canada's top dressage riders. He will be offered for sale at a later date.

Meanwhile, we are keeping our eyes peeled for other great Friesians to offer for sale.

We have other older horses of different breeds, ages 25 to 40, whose 'forever home' is with us. Happy 'old faithfulls', enjoying life.
