Friesians – the majestic black horse

Frisian...freisan…fresen…

Spell it as you will, Friesians have a long, romantic history that dates back many centuries in Friesland, a province of the Netherlands.

The Friesian people took horse breeding seriously, a dedication that led to Friesians being used as royal coach horses, dressage horses, war horses, saddle seat and even circus horses.

But despite their rich history and grand presence, Friesians almost vanished by the mid-1960s. Fortunately, Friesians recaptured visibility in the international driving scene, which prompted revival of the grand black horse.

Today, Friesians number in the tens of thousands around the globe, mainly in the Netherlands and Germany, with popularity increasing rapidly in North America. Films, such as "Ladyhawke," highlighted the breed.

What’s there to love and admire? Kind eyes, small ears, thick, long manes and tails, and feathered feet; swan necks, well-formed heads and striking presence – all packaged in designer black!

Add charming temperament, graceful and nimble movement, and amazing conformation, all providing the highest athletic ability, and you have the Friesian of dreams!

Throughout North America and around the globe, Friesians are becoming much sought after for dressage, as well as for the show arena in both Western and English classes. These noble black horses are wonderful carriage horses and dear companions for pleasure and trail riding.

Athletic Friesians, with their gentle dispositions, bright minds, and innate desire to please, are great candidates for trick training. Often stallions are chosen for this purpose. In several European countries, fans of Friesians delight in watching Quadrilles, and trick-trained Friesians performing both individually and in concert with colourful costumes and music.

The Friesian is a 'people' horse. They love to be with you. They love to be loved.
